On Fire Baby kicks off Grade 1 double for Eisaman over Derby weekend
RSS Feeds Sunday, May 4, 2014
Anita Cauley’s homebred On Fire Baby drew away in deep stretch to win the $327,000 La Troienne S. (G1) by 2 ¾ lengths over Molly Morgan on Kentucky Oaks Day (VIDEO).

On Fire Baby would be joined by Midnight Lucky, winner of Saturday's Humana Distaff (G1), to give Eisaman Equine a pair of Grade 1-winning training graduates during the Kentucky Derby weekend slate of stakes at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Gary Hartlage and ridden by Joe Johnson, On Fire Baby covered the 1 1/16 miles on a fast main track in 1:43.48 and became racing's newest millionaire with Friday’s victory. Now a winner of six of 15 starts, including three graded stakes at Churchill Downs as well as the 2013 Apple Blossom (G1) at Oaklawn Park, On Fire Baby has earned $1,082,687.

After chasing Devil's Cave for the first six furlongs, On Fire Baby, who finished second in last year’s La Troienne a head behind Authenticity, drew even at the head of the lane and quickly pulled clear. The final time was 1:43.38 on a fast track.

“I looked at the race not as Gary Hartlage because in my mind she’s always going to win,” said Hartlage, long-time trainer for Cauley. “I thought the five (Devil’s Cave) would be on the lead and we would be stalking her. (Jockey) Joe (Johnson) had to get into her to keep up. Joe did a super job riding her. He asked her and she went on. I’ve always thought she was one of the top horses in the country and hopefully she showed that today.”

A 5-year-old daughter of Smoke Glacken out of the Gilded Time black-type mare Ornate, On Fire Baby's siblings include Grade 2 Fantasy S. winner High Heels and listed winner French Kiss.
